Overview

The Economics: National Ocean Watch (ENOW) datasets provide time-series data on employment, establishments, wages, and contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) of economic sectors that depend on the oceans and Great Lakes. Economics: National Ocean Watch tracks the composition of and trends in the marine economies of the United States, 30 coastal states, 5 U.S. territories, and almost 500 coastal counties.

ENOW Datasets

Updates to the original ENOW dataset have been paused, as the original dataset uses employer-level microdata that is not currently available. That dataset covers the years from 2005 to 2021.

The new Open ENOW dataset provides similar marine economy estimates based on publicly available data. Open ENOW covers the same states and economic sectors as the original ENOW dataset and reports the same economic metrics. The original ENOW dataset is more detailed compared to Open ENOW, which uses imputed values to fill in data gaps. The Open ENOW dataset covers the years from 2001 to 2024 and will be maintained until the next update of the original ENOW dataset is released. Learn more.

Marine economy data for the U.S. territories is available for the years from 2019 to 2022, with new data published annually.
