“The Coast” is Complicated: A Model to Consistently Describe the Nation’s Coastal Population

This article proposes a model that defines two components of the coastal population: the population that most directly affects the coast, and the population most directly affected by the coast. Use of this model will provide increased consistency in reporting population and other demographic statistics, and provide clarity in the understanding of what constitutes the coastal population.
